"It's like coming home"

Laura and Antti lead hectic entrepreneurial lives and have to balance this working lifestyle with managing a family of seven children, in looking for a new home one of their key objectives was to create a home that was calming and peaceful - an understandable requirement from all view points.

Timber log buildings have complex acoustics but the massive wood logs used in this impressive building with their interlocking design serve to absorb sound across the spectrum and eliminate echos.

Laura and Antti's home sees the use of Kontio's unique laminated massive log - SmartLog. Unlike its competition SmartLog is non-settling meaning that there is no movement so no gaps and no need to adjust as is the case for all other log home manufacturers using laminated timber.

SmartLog also has another redeeming advantage, it allows other materials to used in the design creating total design freedom - no other log home manufacturer can offer such a facility.

“You are promoting sustainability when you buy a log house".

So, it made sense to make use of the availability of geothermal sources for heating and cooling but it is worth noting that log homes perform this task naturally on their own.

Via a complex physical process the internal walls absorb photons, these interact with the timber and vibrationally excited, they generate heat which is then stored in the logs and gradually released overnight.

It was only after moving into their stunning new home that they learned to appreciate the air quality that a log home delivers.

Timber logs "breathe", not in the conventional sense, timber is hygroscopic meaning that moisture is both absorbed and released. This prevents mould growth and rot so creating an healthy indoor atmosphere unmatched by conventional building techniques.

Another requirement from the couple was for the internal walls to be soothing and harmonious so the tones had to be natural so have been left in their natural state.

Living on the coast they also wanted large windows to allow the changing views to be enjoyed throughout the year and for light to flood the building saving on energy costs.

A ten out of ten score then!
